The U.S Retail Giant, has announced that they are planning to open Walmart stores in South Africa by the ending of the year. And it’s not just any store, but a branded Walmart store and it’s the first in SA (South Africa). It’s no news that Walmart already owns a local chain MassMart. A retail group, that operates stores like Games, Makro and Builders Warehouse.

Although, Walmart owning MassMart is not the same as owning it’s own branded stores. Because Massmart still kept their brans name, and operations were not fully integrated into Walmart system.
In continuation, this new stores will carry everything Walmart, from signature look, pricing model and sourcing strategy. Thereby competing directly with South Africa’s major retailers like Shoprite and Pick n Pay.
