Welcome to BizPremi, Let’s talk on why the Corporate Affairs Commission For Your Business, is the right move, and How To Register Your Business With CAC in Nigeria
As a business person, or a person who want’s to have a successful business. Business, is not just about having an idea, or having a building. Some will even say, the sole purpose of a business, is to make profits. However, business goes beyond this.
I believe you already know what CAC is if you’ve read about it on this site. What Is Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) In Nigeria. It is the government body that registers business names, companies, and NGOs in Nigeria. What I want to cover here is the part nobody explains clearly: what actually happens when you sit down to register.
Step by Step To Register Your Business With CAC
Step 1: Decide your registration type first.
Business Name, Limited Liability Company, or Incorporated Trustees. Pick this before you touch the portal. If you’re not sure which one fits, that’s covered in a separate post on this site, but as a quick rule: solo hustle or side business, go Business Name; anything you want to raise money into or protect personally from lawsuits, go LLC.
Step 2: Create your account on the CAC portal.
Go to cac.gov.ng and register for a Company Registration Portal (CRP) account. You’ll need a valid email and phone number. Use ones you actually check, because every status update comes through there.
Step 3: Do a name availability search first, not last.
This is the step people skip and regret. Search your proposed business name (and one or two backups) before you fill in anything else. Names get rejected constantly for being too similar to an existing one, and you don’t want to build out a whole application around a name you can’t have.
Step 4: Fill in the pre-registration details.
Business address, nature of business, proposed name, and for LLCs, details of directors and shareholders. Have your and any co-founder’s valid ID (NIN slip or international passport) and passport photograph ready before you start the portal will ask for these mid-form and it’s annoying to go hunting for them halfway through.
Step 5: Upload your documents and pay.
Memorandum and Articles of Association for LLCs, or the simpler business name form for sole proprietorships. Fees vary by registration type. Check the current CAC fee schedule before you pay, since it does get revised.
Step 6: Wait for approval, then download your certificate.
Processing has sped up a lot in recent years compared to the old paper-based system, but give it a realistic few business days rather than expecting same day approval.
Which Business Is CAC For?
Does not matter, what type of business you run, or the size of your business. So if it’s a startup business, small scale business, large scale or even non profit. It’s for you.
Your business, is it based online, is it a home business, you only have yourself as the only employee or just your family members, It’s also for you.
So in general, it’s for any and every type of business as long as you want to operate in Nigeria.
Benefits Of CAC To Your Business
The benefits of the corporate affairs commission, to your business, is as follow.
- Legal recognition of your business
- Opportunity to investors
- Access to grants, and loans
- Trust and Credibility
- Business Opportunities
- Business Exposure
Conclusion:
One thing I’d tell anyone starting this: don’t let the process feel bigger than it is. It’s form filling and document uploads, not a legal exam. The businesses that get stuck are usually the ones that start the form, hit a confusing field, and close the tab for three weeks. Set aside one uninterrupted hour and just get through it.
For your business to gain ground, and become legal. It must be registered with CAC Nigeria. It goes beyond protecting your business name. it helps to position your business for growth, stability and success in the long run. So why not register your business and give it the recognition it deserves.
